Just Neighbors Field Notes - Winter 2016

Message from the Presidents

Dear Just Neighbors Community,

As we complete our first year as co-presidents, we feel so fortunate to be working with this amazing board of folks committed to the same common values of making a difference in the lives of people in need.

Having both been part of the humble beginnings of Just Neighbors, we are very pleased with the direction that the Board is taking.

Transportation for essential needs - Thank you to Bob and Chris Yuengling and their team of faithful drivers.

Wood Project - Thank you to Jon Bliss, Al Peters and their dedicated team of volunteers for their cutting, splitting, stacking and delivery of wood. The brothers of Weston Priory generously make their land available to us.

Grants - Our collaboration with Neighborhood Connections and local churches make it possible for us to reach those in need in Weston and the surrounding communities.

Support from local businesses - The Vermont Country Store has been a long time supporter of Just Neighbors contributing both dollars as well as staff for projects and events. The Inn at Weston has held "Trivia Nights" where Just Neighbors has been the recipient of funds.

We have also enjoyed the support of other local organizations and the community at large. It truly takes a Village to achieve our desired outreach.

To our DONORS, this all represents YOUR donations at work.

Thank you all,
Donna and Melina

2015 Assistance Summary

In 2015, JN saw the overall assistance of all types it provided in the community decrease by 12% from 2014.  However, some categories of assistance did increase over 2014, such as Medical/Rx (+340%) and Vehicle (+430%).

In 2015, Vermont's rural low-income families continued to face unique challenges as they work to achieve financial and energy security.  While public assistance heating programs are critically important, they're insufficient to carry most assisted households through the Vermont winters. Just Neighbors has focused on providing heating assistance since its inception and the need is now as great as ever.

For the coming year 2016, we expect that heating assistance will continue to be the most essential help JN will be called on to supply.  The generosity of all the Just Neighbors volunteers and donors has supported this dramatic increase in our ability to help those in need. With the ongoing support of our caring community, Just Neighbors will continue to fulfill its mission as an all volunteer organization dedicated to providing short term assistance to local people who are experiencing a sudden and overwhelming challenge in their living situations. Just Neighbors provides assistance for the basic life necessities to address safety, security and other essential components to support family and housing needs.

Transportation

In a rural state like Vermont, driving is a necessity.  Many seniors want to remain in their homes and continue driving but that's not an option due to financial and health considerations.

Many families live in rural areas without access to reliable transportation.  The Just Neighbors ride program provides on-demand transportation for essential medical appointments as well as Rx pickup, and shopping for necessities.  Just Neighbors relies on the generosity of volunteers who donate the use of their cars, fuel and, most importantly, their time.  JN volunteer drivers provided 20 rides (round trip) totaling 1,356 miles in 2015 and are the heroes for many in our community whose essential transportation needs would otherwise go unmet.  Our thanks to all the volunteer drivers for their time and generosity!
Just Neighbors Welcomes a New Board Member

Annie Campbell
I am excited to join Just Neighbors and be a part of an organization that assists those in need in our community.  My previous work has included being an educational consultant for struggling teens, an adventure base counselor at a drug rehab and I headed a non profit that created hands on community service projects for families.  I currently assist people in awakening their spirit through outdoor trips.    As a mother of four I have instilled in my kids the importance of helping others and  I am glad to be back in a role where I can do that.
